Welcome to the Six.
Named for the six square miles of the former “negro’ district, a result of the city’s Master Plan of 1928 which did some damaging things:
-
It institutionalized housing segregation to East Austin only, pushing Black people out of the west side of town and taking over historically Black communities like Wheatsville
-
It forever established the dividing line of Interstate 35 between the central city white-dominated area of town from the majority Black district of East Austin
-
It established bare minimum standards on transportation, utilities, parks, and schools
-
It eliminated trash collection, electricity, paved streets, and water services.
-
It reduced regular trash collection for residents
